A vasectomy is a permanent form of birth control for men. A vasectomy is a minor surgery done in the office during which the doctor will clamp (pinch), cut or seal shut the vas deferens. The vas deferens are tubes that connect the testicles (where sperm is made) to the uretha (the tube the carries urine and sperm outside the body). Doing so keeps the sperm from mixing with semen during sex. Without sperm, an egg cannot be fertilized and create a baby.
It is very important to understand that it usually takes several months after a vasectomy for all sperm to leave the body. You must use another type of birth control during this time or your partner could get pregnant. The doctor will retest you to see when it is safe to stop using another type of birth control.
