Implantable birth control is a small, plastic rod placed under a woman’s skin that releases a hormone that helps to prevent pregnancy, similar to way birth control pills do. However, once in place, implantable birth control lasts for three year, making it one form of birth control that women do not have to remember to take.
The doctor will numb the skin of the inner, upper arm then use an applicator to place a small, plastic rod (about the size of a match stick) under the skin. The procedure is done at the clinic and only takes a few minutes. Many insurance companies will cover the cost; however, we recommend patients check with their insurance before their appointment.
